The Delhi High Court has directed GST authorities across the country to ensure biometric-based Aadhaar authentication before granting new GST registrations, citing concerns over fraudulent registrations and misuse of PAN and Aadhaar details.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Anil Kshetarpal and Justice Shail Jain said the issue must be addressed seriously, noting concerns over government revenue loss and difficulties faced by innocent individuals whose identity details are misused for obtaining fraudulent GST registrations. Government data placed before the Court showed 2,800 fraudulent GST registrations involving ₹15,085 crore in tax evasion during 2023–24, while 1,654 such registrations involving ₹13,109 crore were detected in 2024–25.
The Court has also considered additional safeguards, including facial recognition, video-based verification and stronger checks on the applicant’s identity and business details. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on September 22, 2026, when the Court may consider implementation-related issues raised by the authorities.
